Lagoon “Emergency” Du Jour

When we noticed, last week, that a 6 foot high tide was projected to arrive together with a 14 foot swell on the morning of December 20, it wasn’t hard to predict what we would find if we headed down to the Carmel River Lagoon this morning …

Sure enough! Waves have been overtopping the bar and creating yet another Carmel River Lagoon “emergency.”

A good deal of the 1974 film Zandy’s Bride – based on the book The Stranger in Big Sur, by Lillian Bos Ross, and starring Gene Hackman and Liv Ullman – was filmed at Molera State Park, on a set constructed on the coastal terrace near the mouth of the Big Sur River.

As enormous wealth lives always side by side with abject poverty, it’s no surprise that Pebble Beach has a healthy homeless population. Since most of the work available (making beds, scrubbing floors, blowing leaves, etc.) doesn’t come close to paying for housing, many people live in cars and vans, parked unobtrusively at night in residential neighborhoods.
