Local luminaries inspect the remains of old-growth chaparral that burned during the first week of the Basin Complex Fire – not much regrowth yet in this spot (1-3-09)

Dr. Robert Muller, Director of Research at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, has done us all a favor by writing an article challenging many currently popular ideas about the role of fire in the chaparral (even committing the heresy of questioning the benefits of controlled burn programs!!). Anyone who lives in or near the chaparral owes it to themselves to read this thought-provoking piece.
